Academic Task 1 Overview (Quick Guide)
The overview is the most important part of Task 1. Without it, you usually lose marks even if details are correct.
What an overview should do
- Summarise the main trend(s) in 1–2 sentences
- Compare key highs/lows or biggest changes
- Avoid numbers (save numbers for body)
What to avoid
- Listing every detail
- Copying the question wording
- Writing opinions
Simple overview patterns
- Line chart: “Overall, X increased while Y decreased.”
- Bar chart: “Overall, A was the highest, whereas B was the lowest.”
- Map: “Overall, the area became more residential with new facilities.”
Practice with 3 charts per week and you’ll see fast improvement.
